Acupuncture treatment in progress at Body Perfected, Marylebone

The short answer

What this treatment is

Acupuncture is not an "alternative" treatment. It is a powerful, evidence-based component of integrative medicine, and it is time the word alternative was retired. Integrative medicine means combining the best of conventional and complementary therapies in a coordinated way. That is how Claudia works, and it is why she will happily sit alongside your GP, consultant or fertility clinic rather than in place of them.

Acupuncture is the insertion of fine, single-use sterile needles into specific points along the meridian system to influence physiology: pain regulation, hormonal cycles, digestion, sleep, and the stress response. Body Perfected practises in the British Acupuncture Council (BAcC) tradition, a TCM-led approach informed by 20 years of clinical experience and postgraduate training in TCM Gynaecology and Obstetrics.

Every course begins with the time to be heard. A full TCM intake, including pulse and tongue diagnosis, comes before any needling, so treatment is matched to your presentation rather than to a generic protocol. People come to the Marylebone clinic for:

  • Hormonal and cycle care: irregular, painful, or absent cycles, and the wider picture around them.
  • Stress, sleep, and digestion: the everyday complaints that respond well to settled, regular treatment.
  • Persistent pain: NICE recognises acupuncture as an option for chronic primary pain (NG193).

Acupuncture is one tool within our fuller Traditional Chinese Medicine care, and it sits at the centre of fertility acupuncture. Where recovery or swelling is part of the picture, we combine it with manual lymphatic drainage.

At your first appointment there is time to be properly heard

Your history, your cycle, your energy, and what matters to you. The first session runs 60 to 90 minutes depending on the service: medical history, current medications, sleep, digestion, energy, mood, and your menstrual cycle where relevant. Pulse and tongue diagnosis follow, and from this we arrive at a TCM working diagnosis you understand.

You leave with a written summary of what was done, why, and the plan for your next session.

Claudia provides the best lymphatic drainage massage in London. She can scan your body like no one else. I almost fell asleep during my 90-minute session — the time flew by. Thank you Claudia!

I had a great lymphatic drainage session with Claudia. After having sinus surgery to remove polyps and dealing with congestion, I felt so much better after the session. Highly recommend!

Common
questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are far thinner than the hypodermic needles used for injections: most clients describe a brief, dull ache as the needle settles, called 'de qi', that fades within seconds. Some points are more sensitive than others, and some sessions are more activating than others. If at any point a needle is uncomfortable beyond that initial settling, tell us and we adjust or remove it.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture has a good safety record when delivered by a trained, registered practitioner. Needles are single-use and sterile, which minimises infection risk, and serious adverse effects are uncommon; we screen for risk factors at intake. Mild bruising at a needle site is the most common response. Anyone on blood thinners, with a bleeding disorder, with heart valve disease, or who is pregnant should disclose so points and depth are chosen accordingly.

How many sessions will I need?

Acute musculoskeletal complaints often respond within 3 to 6 sessions. Cycle-related and hormonal work plans in 12-week blocks because egg maturation and hormonal feedback take that long to shift. Chronic conditions (long-standing pain, IBS, anxiety) typically need 6 to 12 sessions to know whether acupuncture is the right tool. We agree a clear plan at session 1 and reassess at 4 weeks.

Can I have acupuncture during pregnancy?

Yes: pregnancy acupuncture is one of the more established BAcC subspecialties. There is a defined list of contraindicated points during pregnancy that every BAcC-trained acupuncturist follows. Common applications are nausea, sleep, lower-back and pelvic-girdle pain, and the pre-birth treatments offered from week 36 onwards.

Will my insurance cover acupuncture?

Some UK private medical insurers reimburse BAcC-registered acupuncturists for specific indications, but cover varies widely. Bring your policy details to the first session and we will help you confirm what is covered before booking subsequent sessions. We can issue a clinical receipt for any insurer that reimburses on submission.
